In hurumanu 4 we attempted to turn dirty water back to drinking water, this is the process of our work.
Aim
The aim of the experiment was to attempt to turn the dirty water back into clean water.
Making dirty water
Method
- Use a 250mL beaker, get 200mL of water.
- Add 2 spoonfuls of dirt.
- Add 10mL of oil.
- Add a spoonful of pebbles.
- Stir it for 2mins.
- Label a piece of paper with your names and place it under your beaker.
- Take a photo of your experiment.

Diluting the water
Method
- Stir the dirty water for 1min.
- Using a measuring cylinder, measure 100mL of dirty water into another beaker.
- Add 100mL of water into the dirty water.
- Stir for 2 mins.
- Discard the original 100mL.
- Repeat.
Diluting the water means to make the solute weaker, adding water
to the dirty water increases the ratio of solvent to solute. For example, if you add more water to raro it would have less flavour. Concentrating it however, is to do the opposite by adding more solute to solvent.
Setting up the filtration system
Method
- Your group needs a retort stand, 2 clamps, 2 funnels 1 piece of filter paper and a cloth.
- Set up the clamp as the demo is.
- Decide how to arrange your filtration set up.
- Leave beside your your dirty water.
- Take a photo of your work.
Filtration
- Make sure the funnels are lined up properly.
- Slowly put the dirty water onto the cloth funnel.
- Check on it every 5 min or so.
- If the water is still dirty, replace the filter water with another one and repeat.
