Silent Writing ESOL

The highlight of my weekend (100 words)

The highlight of my weekend was when I went to the mall with Alex and my old classmates from my old school. At first we played basketball at the court at school, but it was too hot to play outdoors. We went to Gong Cha, bought some bubble tea and went straight to Timezone. We went on the bumper cars which was a lot of fun, but it felt like a minute until it was over. Alex and I said goodbye and went to the bus stop, we missed the first bus so we had to wait for fifteen minutes.

Rubber Band Cup Mover

In Health, we have been working on our inter-personal skills by building a rubber band cup mover and working together to move 5 cups from an area to another, 1 by 1.

The IP skills I used was verbal communication, non verbal communication and active listening.

Using these IP skills helped our group get more done and do well on the challenge.

I worked with Levi and Odin, we were at a disadvantage because there were only three of us while the other groups had at least four.

If I were to do it again I would negotiate more with my team, since a particular member wasn't helping us with the practice and building.

I was working on the Hellison's level 3 (self direction). I know this because I participated in building the mover, practices and the challenge. I also cleaned our equipment.

Here are the photos from the activity:

Health Art

In hurumanu 5 we have been working on our inter personal skills. We had to partner up and we were given a picture. The picture must not be shown to the partner. We had to describe the image and the other person has to draw it. My partner was Jaren but Hrishaal later joined us.

This was the image my partner described for me.
This was what I drew and understood.

(didn't get to finish)

The interpersonal skills we used were; verbal, non-verbal communication and active listening.

Abraham Lincoln

In social studies, we have been researching a hero/villain of our choice. I chose Abraham Lincoln who ended slavery in the US.

I included important dates, photos and a bibliography of where I found this information. An interesting thing I learned was that Abe Lincoln didn't always have a beard.

Dirty Water

In hurumanu 4 we attempted to turn dirty water back to drinking water, this is the process of our work.

Aim

The aim of the experiment was to attempt to turn the dirty water back into clean water.

Making dirty water

Method

  1. Use a 250mL beaker, get 200mL of water.
  2. Add 2 spoonfuls of dirt.
  3. Add 10mL of oil.
  4. Add a spoonful of pebbles.
  5. Stir it for 2mins.
  6. Label a piece of paper with your names and place it under your beaker.
  7. Take a photo of your experiment.

Diluting the water

Method

  1. Stir the dirty water  for 1min.
  2. Using a measuring cylinder, measure 100mL of dirty water into another beaker.
  3. Add 100mL of water into the dirty water.
  4. Stir for 2 mins.
  5. Discard the original 100mL.
  6. Repeat.
Diluting the water means to make the solute weaker, adding water
to the dirty water increases the ratio of solvent to solute. For example,  if you add more water to raro it would have less flavour. Concentrating it however, is to do the opposite by adding more solute to solvent.

Setting up the filtration system

Method

  1. Your group needs a retort stand, 2 clamps, 2 funnels 1 piece of filter paper and a cloth.
  2. Set up the clamp as the demo is.
  3. Decide how to arrange your filtration set up.
  4. Leave beside your your dirty water.
  5. Take a photo of your work.
Filtration
  1. Make sure the funnels are lined up properly.
  2. Slowly put the dirty water onto the cloth funnel.
  3. Check on it every 5 min or so.
  4. If the water is still dirty, replace the filter water with another one and repeat.

Who is Dame Whina Cooper?

Dame Whina Cooper is renowned for her accomplishments in fighting for Maori land rights. She is best known for leading the famous 1975 land march (aka. hikoi). The protest was to retain control over the Maori land they once had. 50 people left Te Hapua in the far north on the 14th of September 1975 for a 1000km walk to Wellington. Led by the 79 year old Cooper, the hikoi grew in strength and numbers. As it approached towns and cities, other people started to join in. They arrived at the parliament with a petition signed by 60,000 people. The petition called for an end to mono cultural land laws which rejected Maori cultural values. In the end, the hikoi was a success and Dame Whina Cooper became a national hero.

Cultural Pendant

Yesterday at wood work, we designed some pendants. The pendants are supposed to represent a culture. Mine was the Philippine flag's sun, but modified as a cross. I figured the shape was a bit difficult to make and it looked very fragile, so I adjusted it to a more simpler shape. For my new shape, I filled the space in between the sun's rays and drew it on a piece of wood, ready for the next session.
