Human Rights
Our digital learning objective for English and social studies this week are about human rights, we watched a documentary about Gloriavale. Gloriavale is a Christian community located on the west coast of the south island where everyone is extremely religious. Men work hard labour while the women do the housework. Kids are expected to do jobs when they are old enough and none of them gets paid. They do their jobs for each other. Women also don't get to choose who they marry, the elders and men get to.
We also started reading a book called Abomination by Robert Swindell. The book is about a girl named Martha who was bullied for wearing clothes that her mother made. Her family is highly religious and her father gives her beatings. There's also another main character who is Martha's only friend, his name is Scott. Scott was also bullied for befriending Martha.
